China has reported its fifth human case of bird flu, with a case in Liaoning province, according to official reports. There have now been 25 bird flu outbreaks reported in poultry since 19 October. Millions of birds have been vaccinated (including all 320 million in Liaoning), and tens of millions more have been destroyed around the country. The World Health organisation has also suggested closing down live poultry markets in a bid to slow infections.

It has also been reported that the pharmaceuticals company Roche has licensed its anti-viral flu drug, Tamiflu, to Shanghai Pharmaceuticals group in an effort to help meet high demand. In clinical trials Tamiflu has been shown to work against the symptoms of the H5N1 strain of bird flu.
