Rock & Roll (Over)

Following our recent post on “That’s Shanghai” [1] and the Mark Kitto saga (a story that is noted on just about every blog on doing business in China), another magazine has hit the rocks. But in this case, the ink was barely dry before the magazine – Rolling Stone – was closed down due to their “illegal action” and improper registration procedures. It may however have more to do with the somewhat edgy content.

It is another example of the risks involved when doing business in such a sensitive sector in China. The left hand can always take away what the right hand has given. To minimize the risks, businesses need to build a broad base of support, and be sensitive (or even self-censoring, as in the case of Google [2]) to the internal pressures faced by regulators.
